Met de debuutroman van Mario Vargas Llosa nu ook achter de ogen, kan ik zeggen dat ik zijn hele oeuvre aan fictiewerken heb gelezen. De verhalen uit deze in 1959 gepubliceerde bundel gaan over stoere jongens in het Lima van de jaren '50, jongens uit het volk op zoek naar de pikorde binnen hun groep, of op zoek naar een groep die hen beter past.
Vargas Llosa's talent is duidelijk bij het lezen van deze zeven verhalen, die elk al hun eigen karakter en schrijfstijl hebben, van de vage wij-vorm en eliptische stijl van het titelverhaal, tot de sterk dialogerende vorm van "The Leaders".
Hierbij zijn bibliografie, met aanduiding van mijn waardering : "Conversation In The Cathedral", "The War Of The End Of The World" en "The Feast Of The Goat" zijn meesterwerken. De rest is het lezen meer dan waard.
